Hockey Gear – The Best For Hockey Players

So you like to play hockey? Are you a good player? Are you fast? Do you score a whole bunch of goals on the net? What type of hockey gear do you use? These are questions whose answers can seperate the good players from the great players. In the sport of roller hockey there are many options to choose from. Do I want to be an indoor hockey player? Do I wish to play hockey in an outdoor arena? It all depends on you.

Many people don’t realize that everything they do in the sport of roller hockey can have dramatic effects on the way they play. Why is that? If you look at hockey as sport, it is very scientific. There’s speed, power, aggression, physics, and they all play a huge role in the game. So it must come as no suprise to learn that the hockey equipment is manufactured with science in mind.

The best hockey equipment is most likely aerodynamic. You would want to keep the speed or gain the speed to be quick enough to dodge or be fast enough to hit the opponent. The hockey equipment should also be light. The lighter the gear is, the faster the hockey players move. A good mix to have, is both light and strong equipment. You need hockey gear that won’t break and leave a player injured.

Think about this for a moment. How good could you be at a sport if all the equipment was heavy and it busted on you all the time? So these two factors are a given in hockey companies that are making the equipment. These companies are making great technology year after year. Some of it borders on science fiction. Which companies make the best stuff? Well, that’s only a question you can answer after you’ve tried a few of their products.

The following are some pretty well known manufacturers that make good hockey gear.

Bauer: They’ve been around forever and are a household name in any hockey players mind. They’ve also bought the company Mission. So they have even more great products in their lineup.

Then you have a company that gained ground so fast you don’t know what to think. Companies such as Reebok Hockey. They went ahead and claimed Bauer’s rival CCM and are now known as the official hockey equipment sponsor of the NHL. It’s choices like these that give hockey players an easy yet tough decision to make. Both are good hockey companies and both make outstanding products.

Did I also mention that both make Ice and Roller hockey products? They are very competitive and should be. They are vying for the attention of all the sportsmen who play the coolest game on earth. One thing you do have to be careful about are NHL player endorsements. Any time a professional sports star tells you to buy something, it doesn’t mean they are being genuine. It could just be that they were paid to do so and have dollar signs in their eyes. So before you go out there and buy, be mindful of what you need to do to select the best hockey equipment.

Ice hockey (frequently simply called hockey in countries where it is the most popular form of hockey) is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team’s goal. It is a fast-paced physical sport. Ice hockey is most popular in areas that are sufficiently cold for natural reliable seasonal ice cover, such as Canada, the northern United States, the Nordic countries (especially Sweden and Finland), Russia, the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. With the advent of indoor artificial ice rinks it has become a year-round pastime in these areas. Ice hockey is one of the four major North American professional sports. Worldwide the National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest level for men and both the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) and the Western Women’s Hockey League (WWHL) are the highest levels for women. It is the official national winter sport of Canada, where the game enjoys immense popularity.

While there are 69 total members of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), 162 of 177 medals at the IIHF World Championships have been taken by seven nations: Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States.[1][2] Of the 63 medals awarded in men’s competition at the Olympic level from 1920 on, only six did not go to the one of those countries. All twelve Olympic and 36 IIHF World Women Championships medals have gone to one of those seven countries, and every gold medal in both competitions has been won by either Canada or the United States.[

History

From oral histories, there is evidence of a tradition of an ancient hockey-like game played among the Mi'kmaq First Nation in Eastern Canada. In Legends of the Micmacs (1894), Silas T. Rand describes a Mi'kmaq ball game people called tooadijik. Rand also describes a game which was played (likely after European contact) with hurleys, called wolchamaadijik.[5] European immigrants brought various versions of hockey-like games to Canada, such as the Irish sport of hurling, the closely related Scottish sport of shinty, and versions of field hockey played in England. Where necessary, these seem to have been adapted for icy conditions. Early paintings show “shinney”, an early form of hockey with no standard rules, being played in Russia.

Thomas Chandler Haliburton, in The Attache: Second Series, published in 1844, reminisced about boys from King’s College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia, playing “hurly on the long pond on the ice” when he was a student there, no later than 1810.[5][6] To this day, shinny (or shinney) (derived from Shinty) is a popular Canadian term for an informal type of hockey, either on ice or as street hockey. These early games may have also absorbed the physically aggressive aspects of what the Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia called dehuntshigwa’es (lacrosse).

In 1825 Sir John Franklin wrote that “The game of hockey played on the ice was the morning sport” while on Great Bear Lake during one of his Arctic expeditions. In 1843 a British Army officer in Kingston, Ontario in Upper Canada, wrote “Began to skate this year, improved quickly and had great fun at hockey on the ice.”[7] An article in the Boston Evening Gazette, in 1859, makes reference to an early game of hockey on ice occurring in Halifax in that year.[6]

The first recorded hockey games were played by British soldiers stationed in Kingston and Halifax during the mid-1850s. In the 1870s, the first known set of ice hockey rules were drawn up by students at Montreal’s McGill University. These rules established the number of players per side to 9 and replaced the ball with a wood puck.[7]

Based on Haliburton’s writings, there have been claims that modern ice hockey originated in Windsor, Nova Scotia, by Kings College students and was named after an individual, as in “Colonel Hockey’s game”.[8]

According to the Austin Hockey Association, the word puck is derived from the Scottish and Gaelic word “puc” or the Irish word “poc”, meaning to poke, punch or deliver a blow. This definition is explained in a book published in 1910 entitled “English as we Speak it in Ireland” by P. W. Joyce. It defines the word puck as “… The blow given by a hurler to the ball with his caman or hurley is always called a puck”.

Hockey Equipment For Ice and Inline: Hockey Skates

Hockey Equipment for ice and inline hockey are two very different things. Why are they so different in nature you ask? Well, for one, one sport uses wheels. The other sport uses a sharp metal blade. You might find some similar things in both hockey equipment, but you should know what makes each of them.

Like I said, the blade is used for ice hockey. The blade on an ice hockey skate, helps dig into the ice and then glide along it. So the hockey player has both speed an control. They can also stop by tearing into the ice with their feet. This usually sends up particles of ice and a cool wooshing affect. It’s also commonly known as the hockey stop.

Can you hockey stop on roller blades. Let’s say for example you have a pair of inline Reebok Hockey skates. Can you stop? Will you need a special pair of roller hockey skates? Will you need RBK11′s or another special skate. No, it’s all in the wheels. It’s probably easier to do a hockey stop on inline hockey skates with a pair of super hard outdoors wheels. The reasoning for this is that it most likely will slide along the surface. Soft roller hockey wheels tend to grip the surface and will cause you problems. Just remember skating on the hard wheels you might not get a chance to hockey stop if you keep sliding while trying to skate. Remember, it’s all about the surface and the wheels.

Which is faster? I would say that ice hockey skates are definitely faster, but inline hockey wheels are catching up. The better the wheel and bearing technology is, the faster hockey players can skate. There some pretty fast bearings out there.

If there is one similarity that I have to mention, it has to be that both ice hockey and roller hockey skates need to be maintenanced. You havet to sharpen the ice hockey blades and you have to lubricate your bearings if you want to have fast skates in both sports. Hockey equipment is a simple thing to understand.

Hockey Equipment That Improves The Player

If you have played the sport of hockey for as long as I have, then you’ll know that hockey equipment matters almost as much as the skill of the player. Why is that? Well for one, you have to take the sport of hockey itself into consideration. There are two types of hockey where the equipment you use can really affect your performance. The first is ice hockey. Ice hockey more or less requires sharp blades on your skates and aerodynamic gear to improve your playing. As with all sports, the lighter the hockey equipment the more you can accelerate your skill. It all comes down to optimizing. Ice hockey gear can only be optimized so much before it becomes a non issue.

The other type of hockey where the equipment can make an even bigger difference, is roller hockey. Roller hockey equipment can be tweaked and upgraded on so many levels. This is all based on affordability, price and the budget of the player. What makes roller hockey so different than ice hockey? It is an easy factor to guess. The skates. The skates the players use in both sports are very different. One pair of hockey skates glides on a slick surface such as ice and the other pair has wheels that roll on a much harder surface. The surface can vary very much in roller hockey. Some are flat and smooth like in indoor hockey. The others can be rough like concrete in outdoor hockey. Which type of hockey equipment can improve the roller hockey player? Well, the following are a few based on my experience growing up playing the sport:

Abec bearings for the skate wheels can help out tremendously in speed. With my experience I’ve had good performance with Abec-5 bearings and up. Although, I’ve read that Bones Swiss bearings are actually better and give a boost in overall speed. It is also a good thing to make sure they are lubricated properly. This will be a good deciding factor on how fast a hockey player can skate.

While having the best hockey skates you can have is a good thing, I would mostly just stick to picking a pair that has a good aluminum frame. These can last a very a long time. Everything else on the skates can be upgraded later on when you get the money. I’ve personally used Bauer hockey skates and I can say that they are very comfortable and give good performance. Even though I’ve never actually used Reebok hockey skates, I’ve owned a pair of CCM Tacks. I can happily say they lasted me longer than 10 years and are still usable. Reebok hockey purchased CCM hockey not too long ago. I don’t know how their hockey skates have changed other than them maybe adding the Reebok pump to its features.

Lastly, your hockey stick is what I consider to be the final deciding factor in your performance as a hockey player. It is what you use to control the puck. How you shoot, slapshot, stick handle, it all depends on your stick. If you have a very light stick that is very strong, you should be able to improve your hockey skills considerably. In most cases, the more expensive sticks are the ones made with a stronger material that also is lighter. If you are interested in getting a better stick, most players tend to go with a composite material for the hockey shaft.

In the end, what gear you choose largely depends on your own personal preference. The items I have listed above are the ones that helped me in my playing. I don’t know what will work for everyone, but I do know that a deciding factor in how good you can be can come down to the use and brand of your hockey equipment.

Roller Hockey Equipment – What Do You Need for a Safe Game?

If you have kids, then you’re probably already familiar with roller hockey equipment. Also called “street hockey” or “inline hockey”, many kids – and adults – are getting involved in this new sport that can be played at home anytime.

Roller hockey is played on roller skates, and a game can be started anywhere there’s a smooth surface. This surface can include driveways, playgrounds, empty parking lots or even the local street, hence the name “street hockey.”

The good news is that this exciting and fast-moving game gets kids outside playing and exercising instead of parked in front the Nintendo or Wii.

Roller Hockey Equipment Provides Protection from Falls and Game Bumps

Just like its counterpart ice hockey, roller hockey has its own protective equipment. This can include gloves, padded pants and jerseys, knee pads, helmets and masks.

There is a goalie for roller hockey just like there is for ice hockey, and he can be pretty well bundled up for protection.

Lets start with inline hockey basics.

Inline Hockey Skates Are the Foundation of Your Game

The game moves on skates, typically inline skates, which have all four wheels “in line” on the bottom of the skate. Roller hockey skates keep the game moving quickly. As with ice hockey, good support is needed for inline skates. Many of the wheels have specially designed bearings for fast motion and durability.

Prices for inline skates start at about and go up fast. A quality pair of skates can cost as much as 0 or more.

Inline skates are typically worn about one shoe size smaller than usual shoe size. You’ll want to try on your skates before you buy them, but be aware that you want no more than ? inch of space between the back of your heel and the skate. Toes should almost brush against the front inside of the skate. Your skates should feel snug and hold your foot securely when fully laced.

Be careful not to go too large, because this will cause blisters and uncomfortable calluses. Your skate should feel like it’s an extension of your foot.

Proper Roller Hockey Equipment Includes Elbow, Shin, Knee and Shoulder Gear

Bear in mind that just like ice hockey, there’s going to be a puck flying at incredible speeds, and players will be swinging hockey sticks that can do serious damage.

You’ll want to prepare with roller hockey equipment that will protect against stick injuries, crashes and falls.

Think about it. If you were flying around on pavement and took a fall when traveling 20 mph, you could end up with some serious road rash. Be prepared by dressing in shoulder gear, and girdles with padding in the thighs, hips and buttocks. Wear protective gloves.

There are also special knee and elbow pads. These are especially important pieces of every player’s roller hockey equipment, because they protect the areas that are most prone to injury. When you fall, it’s typically the knees and elbows that take the brunt of the landing.

A good helmet and mask will protect against flying pucks and swinging sticks.

Be aware that goalies require even more protection, including chest, leg and arm protection. They will also wear a full helmet with mask.

Roller Hockey Equipment Needed to Play the Game

Now we get to the fun stuff! The final required roller hockey equipment needed to pay a games includes a puck, hockey sticks and a goal or net.

Because the game is played on flat surfaces like pavement and cement, street hockey gives players the choice of balls or pucks.

Interestingly, roller hockey equipment now includes special balls and pucks that were developed for specific weather conditions. These are balls designed to have no bounce, and they can be used in temperatures of 32 degrees or colder with other balls for 32 degrees or warmer. One ball has even been designed to handle 70 degrees or warmer for hot weather play.

Roller hockey sticks look very similar to their ice hockey counterparts but have been designed for street play.

Sticks come in right- or left-handed designs. Goalies require sticks that are slightly different, since their job, like ice hockey goalies, is different from those who move the puck up and down the court.

Inline hockey sticks are also somewhat different than their ice hockey counterparts.

Lastly, of course, game requires a goal. The goal is a net, like ice hockey, and the goalie stands in front of the net to prevent the puck from entering. Nets come in several sizes, depending upon the needs of the players. If a regulation 6 x 4 foot goal is needed, then these are also available.

With a little preparation and the right roller hockey equipment, players can enjoy the outdoors and team work, too!
