The game basketball has been one of the most renowned sports in the planet. Basketball sports products and wares such as basketball shoes, basket ball, portable basketball backboards and hoops and sportswear sell millions of goods every year. One of the richest athletes in the world are basketball players, like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Wilt Chamberlain, so are the basketball coaches too like Phil Jackson, Bob Knight and Pat Riley. Everywhere, you can see basketball courts in most corner of the neighborhood. And the youth and the old persons alike, handicapped or with two total pair of legs, ladies and guys, regardless size you qualify-everyone likes to play this game.
There are three basic equipment necessary for basketball. The hoop, the ball and the court. Unlike any other sports, basketball is distinct for it can be played both indoors and in the open. The first basketball game was just consisted of a circular ring mounted on a wall and a ball, and the rules were basic. Every team should try to have a score by shooting and throwing the ball through the hoop by following a set of rules. There are particular scoring systems to observe and fouls and violation to be avoided.
Consequently, these rules and regulations have been improved from the day it was first played. Today, considered to be one of the most common and permanent professional sports, certain set of rules and regualtions are required in order to play this game. The ball for example has to be 29.5 inches for men, and weighing 22 ounces, and 28.5 for women weighing 20 ounces. The basketball backboard is generally ten feet tall, nonetheless it may have variation. The basketball hoop should be 45.7 in diameters and the basketball court generally measures to 28 x 15 meters.
For non-competitive sports however, equipments can vary. Basketball players can be inventive with the backboard, some community courts only require a ring and an expansive place to dribble with. Some community courts and playgrounds also have portable basketball backboards, which can also be put up on backyard houses. Even the game itself can also diversify. Today we have six by six basketball, instead of five members. There is also the horseball which can be played whilst riding on a horse, and is a combination of rugby, polo and basketball. There is also the water basketball, wheelchair basketball and even unicycle basketball.
The women’s basketball has begun in 1892 and seven years afterward has become a recognized game because of the labors and pains of Senda Berenson. It’s also one of the sports that even the handicapped can do. True enough, basketball is considered to be both non-discriminatory and beneficial to improve physical agility and endurance as well as to sharpen thinking skills. It is also one of the main factors why parents want their kids to grow tall and stalwart, because one has to be at the least 6 feet high with clear-cut shooting skills in order to be a professional basketball player. That is why schools offer basketball courses to young kids and youngsters so they can better their skill while shooting on those portable basketball backboards.

Basketball apparatus manufacturers claim that they craft 207,000 basketballs each year. It is also reported that from 1998 to the current time, about million were earned from retailing roughly 3.6 million basketballs in the United States alone. Knowing these figures, perhaps it is safe to claim that basketball is among one of the most widely held sports in the United States, and even in the world. Anybody can play basketball, and anybody can put up a basketball goal in their own houses, or expressionless lots in their community area.

A basketball goal has two types. Depending on your necessity or your choice, you can choose to buy a goal for institutional use or for residential usage.
Institutional basketball equipments are used by professionals. NBA courts, public school courts and community courts all uses institutional basketball system for they are composed of heavyweight basketball hoops, poles and basketball boards. Professional players are likely to play intense and heavily, so hard-wearing basketball equipments are considered necessary. Same with public school or community courts which accommodate a number of numbers of players and athletes every day. A community or public school basketball court is commonly comprised of supplementary basketball apparatus like gym floor covers, aluminum bleachers, wall pads and score boards, and naturally the basketball hoops.

Nearly all institutional basketball hoops are inground. Meaning they are permanently tiled upon the earth. Some residential houses also favor inground basketball hoops if they have a certain blank patch for the makings of a permanent basketball court. But, because a basketball court is expansive enough, table tennis or more out-of-doors sport can also be played inside the court. If that is the situation, even for community or public school courts, it’s much preferred to have a portable basketball hoop, which can be moved or transported to be set away.

There are four types of institutional basketball systems, i.e. the inground adjustable which can be adjusted with its pole depending on the height and age of the players; the inground fixed height which has a standard height regulated for all professional basketball sport; the portable basketball which can be moved to new areas; and finally the wall mount basketball system which has no use of the pole and can be casted upon to any flat pavement.

For residential purposes on the other hand, you can also choose between the inground adjustable or fixed height, the portable basketball system and the roof or wall mounted basketball hoops. Residential purposes are generally for recreational purposes, so you can decide to opt for a less-pro looking basketball court. A basketball hoop and a basketball could do along with a vacant land.

But, currently, you can also decide to put up a basketball goal beside your swimming pool, so you can a much more pleasant swim. It’s also nice for social party and pool parties for your cronies. But, if you are hosting for a kid’s pool party, do not forget to post a padding to guaranty safety and well-being for your children.

You cannot become a championship caliber team or player without dominating the backboard! The team that controls the backboard during a basketball game would most likely win. Why? More basketball rebounds leads to more possessions, and more possessions lead to more second-chance scoring opportunities. And, the team with the most second-chance scoring opportunities will win.

How important is rebounding? Every player on a team should learn how to rebound effectively, regardless of your position on the team. The reasoning behind this is that, every player should form the habit of attempting to grab the rebound after either an offensive or defensive shot has been made. Each player should always assume that the shot will be missed. With that being said, a team should have five solid rebounders on the basketball court at all times during a game.

What are the traits of a great basketball rebounder? Although your size and height as a basketball player could give you an advantage when attempting to rebound a basketball, they’re not the primary determining factors to becoming a great rebounder. For example, Dennis “the worm” Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in the NBA (National Basketball Association), despite the fact that he was an average height of 6-7″ as a professional basketball player and barely weighed 210 lbs. Although he was not a great scorer, his uncanny yet masterful ability to successfully grab rebounds (both on offense and defense) helped his teams win several NBA titles and earned him two consecutive defensive player of the year awards, which is an incredible accomplishment. What Dennis Rodman and other great rebounders knew is that, one of the main keys to effective rebounding is Positioning–not your height or size.

Floor Positioning

A great rebounder always establishes an excellent floor position when attempting to grab a rebound. An excellent floor position means that you fight for the inside position by being closer to the basketball hoop than your opponent, regardless of whether you are trying to grab an offensive or defensive rebound.

Grabbing the Rebound

Once you have established an inside position, the most effective way to grab a rebound is by leaping straight up in the air with great explosiveness and power using both feet, keeping your legs spread apart and butt pointing outward, and grabbing the basketball with both hands. Bring the basketball in front of you after you grab it instead of keeping it over your head.

This keeps your opponent away from you, and prevents him from grabbing the basketball or smacking it out of your hands as you are coming back down after you have grabbed the rebound.

Catch all rebounds instead of batting the basketball into the air or out of bounds. This would allow you and your team to maintain possession of the basketball.

Protecting the basketball after a Rebound

All your effort to grab the rebound and regain possession of the basketball would be in vain if you do not protect the basketball on your way down. Remember, after you grab a rebound, you will usually be surrounded by opponents that are standing by ready and eager to steal the basketball from you. Be alert and vigilante!

As you land after grabbing a rebound, bring the basketball in under your chin (Chinning the basketball) with your elbows out and with a hand on each side of the basketball gripping it tightly. Do not swing your elbows wildly in order to keep your opponent(s) away from you, because doing so might lead to a foul violation.

Pivot away from an opponent that might be trying to steal the basketball away from you. Do not put the basketball on the floor immediately after going up for a rebound, especially if you are surrounded by your opponents.

Keep your head up after grabbing the rebound so that you can easily scan the entire basketball court to see if you can find an open teammate who might be positioned to lead a fast break for an easy score.

There you have it…Becoming an awesome rebounder is as simple as (1) Establishing great inside position; (2) Grabbing the rebound; and, (3) Protecting the basketball after you grab the rebound. With constant practise, there is no reason why you cannot become a top, if not the best, rebounder for your basketball team. In addition to mastering the mechanics of grabbing a rebound as illustrated above, equally as important is developing a mindset or attitude that you will attempt to grab every rebound during a basketball game. Remember, it is not the “size” of the rebounder that matters; rather, it is his burning desire to go after every rebound.

Most basketball players would definitely invest in a reliable pair of basketball shoes. After all, the game of basketball requires you to move vigorously. The movements such as jumping, running, shooting, blocking, and other side to side actions are obviously employed in the basketball game. How can one sustain all the necessary moves when his basketball shoes easily tear away?

The basketball players are nonetheless wise enough to choose a good and decent pair of basketball shoes. These pairs of basketball shoes need to be enduring so that not only wear and tear will be overcome but it will contain more of the capacity of hindering any occurrence of injuries on the player’s lower body parts. The basketball shoes should likewise be comfortable to be worn by the player as he executes the routines of the game. This is significant especially that the player needs to move swiftly and the least he requires is any difficulty in transferring his body weight from one foot to another. More so, if you are a basketball player yourself, you should always go for comfortable but reliable basketball shoes.

The Variety of Basketball Shoes

However, basketball players are different. They then opt for different kinds of basketball shoes. There are those power players who prefer basketball shoes with the high tops for the utmost ankle comfort and support. Meanwhile, the all-around basketball gamers often go for the mid-sole basketball shoes. The speedsters on the other hand most likely want the low-top and lightweight basketball shoes that provide no restriction on the ankles.

There are basketball players who utilize plain tennis shoes when they go about the game. But then there are dangers that come along with tennis shoes. Some risks include higher chances of skidding, getting injured, and being slowed down due to weakening grips.

The Makeup of Basketball Shoes

The basketball shoes are either crafted through the use of canvas, synthetic leather, or leather alone. The most popularly utilized material for the basketball shoes is the synthetic leather due to its lightweight and durability. Natural leather material is prone to stretching therefore heightening the dangers for the player. Other branded basketball shoes utilize the combined materials of natural textile or leather and the synthetic leather.

Basketball teams are oftentimes sponsored by basketball shoes manufacturers. The common requirement is the reliable sock liner therein. As of now, there are several varieties of basketball shoes sold on the market. But of course, the standards for the choice of basketball shoes are always set for traction, durability, style, comfort, and support. Both male and female basketball players can very well satisfy themselves with the wide array of basketball shoes on the market.

Michael Redd played collegiately at Ohio State University.
Deron Williams- Utah Jazz; Deron Williams has both a strong basketball inside game and outside jumper. Slashes his way through opponents with penetration similar to a vibrant “Rookie” basketball version of Gary Payton (The Glove- from Oregon State University). Deron Williams played collegiately at the University of Illinois (Big 10/NCAA)
Chris Paul- New Orleans Hornets; Chris Paul had arguably the best season of all National Basketball Association (NBA) players and and some basketball fans, writers and critics, feel as though he should have won the NBA’s MVP award. Chris Paul is a versatile Point Guard with a knack for penetrating the lane and creating havok for defenders, as big men in the middle have to converge, leaving wide open jump shots for Chris Paul’s (CP’s) teammates in New Orleans. The New Orleans Hornets are having an exciting time with NBA basketball and Olympic basketball fans will be watching one of the best point guards in the modern NBA! Chris Paul played for the Wake Forrest Demon Deacons of the NCAA’s Atlantic Coast Conference (notable ACC basketball programs: Duke University, University of Maryland, North Carolina State University, Florida State University and University of North Carolina).
Tayshaun Prince- (Coach Jamaal’s)! Look for Howard to control the paint like SHAQ (Phoenix Suns) and dominate Olympic play. Noted for his famous U Tube (YouTube, you tube, utube) “Superman” dunk, Dwight Howard came into the NBA right after high-school, like his NBA counter-part…Kobe Bryant (of the 81 point performance, which can be seen on YouTube)!
Dwayne Wade- Miami Heat; D-Wade of the marketing NBA creatives, is a slashy, creative, shooting guard witha championship ring to go with the exceptional performance he put on during the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. LeBron is only a blink away from establishing himself as the epitome of NBA shooting guards with strength and power to go along with his basketball intelligence which is unmatched! LeBron James came into the NBA, right after high-school and was regarded highly as everyone’s McDonald’s Basketball All-American, from Ohio.
Carlos Boozer- Utah Jazz; the former Duke University Blue Devil is a fierce inside presence and has a soft touch, he’ll be an asset teamming up with Deron Williams, as they’re teammates with the Western Conference Utah Jazz in the NBA.

Some of the basketball members of the United States Men’s Basketball (USA) Team have had experience with FIBA Basketball, and the World Championships.

The best NCAA College Basketball Coaches have the uncanny ability to get their players motivated for “Big” games and throughout the entire season. Here’s a list of some of NCAA basketball’s best coaches:

John Thompson- coached the mighty Georgetown Hoyas (“Hoya Paranoia”) to multiple NCAA championships, and 2 of the most dominant centers in NCAA and NBA history; Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. Coach John Thompson’s influence on the game of basketball is evident by his former player, Patrick Ewing’s induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Typically when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame and included in the realms of such great basketball talent, it’s a direct reflection of their coach, such is the case with former Georgetown University Coach and former Boston Celtic- John Thompson, one of the best collegiate coaches in basketball history. Coach Thompson’s best collegiate coaching days were in the Big East Conference against the likes of…Syracuse University, St. John’s University, Boston College, Providence College, Villanova University and Pitt University (alma mater of former NFL Dallas Cowboy- Tony Dorsett). John Thompson- Georgetown Hoyas
Dean Smith- The former University of North Carolina Head Basketball Coach has coached the like of Michael (“Air”) Jordan, James Worthy, Vince Carter, Kenny (“The Jet”) Smith, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Joe Wolf and many more! Dean Smith and his famous “4-Corner Offense” of the mid to late 1980′s was popularized by the teams including Michael (“Air”) Jordan, James Worthy, Brad Daugherty, Sam Perkins, Kenny (“The Jet”) Smith and others, symbolized by “UCLA-like” backdoor cuts and Slam Dunks by Jordan and UNC teammates. Dean Smith, a master recruiter with an extremely high NCAA basketball winning percentage-that makes for a great coach! He was one of the greatest coaches of college basketball history! Coach John Woodens’s best collegiate coaching days were in the then Pacific 8 Conference (now PAC-10)! Interesting Fact: John Wooden once coached high school basketball in South Bend Indiana, home of the University of Notre Dame “Fighting” Irish! John Wooden- UCLA Bruins
Adolf Rupp- the former NCAA basketball coach of the University of Kentucky, Adolf Rupp was a graduate of Kansas University (Wilt Chamberlain’s Alma Mater). Coach Rupp for whom the University of Kentucky’s Rupp Arena is named, propelled the University of Kentucky to national prominence, during the 1930′s through the 1971-72 seasons (41 seasons). Of collegiate basketball coaches with more than 500 wins, Coach Adolf Rupp had over an 82% winning percentage- the highest winning percentage in college basketball history. Coach Krzyzewski is once of the best recruiters in college basketball.
Bobby Dye- one of the best defensive NCAA basketball coaches in NCAA basketball history. Coach Bobby Dye is an eccentric addition to my list of the greatest NCAA basketball coaches ever, because his style of ball control and hard-nosed defense was a tactical basketball approach that could be used to compete against any team in college basketball. Coach Bobby Dye had successful NCAA coaching stints at Cal State-Fullerton and Boise State University (Alma Mater of former NBA/ New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, New Jersey Nets Guard- Chris Childs, former Big Sky Player of the Year- Arnell Jones and International basketball star- Tanoka Beard, and Wilson Foster).
Lute Olson- University of Arizona Wildcats, Head Basketball Coach, Lute Olson has appeared in 4 Final Fours and won the NCAA basketball national championship in 1997 with current NBA guard- Mike Bibby leading the way.
Played for the great, legendary Coach Ed Palubinskas of Olympic fame and college history. Ed Palubinskas set Olympic scoring records while playing for the Australian Olympic Basketball National Team and is well kwown for shooting accuracy so much that he tutored the great NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal while with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and currently the NBA World Champion Miami Heat! Ed Palubinskas was great to play for, he made me work really hard and taught me to shoot to convert and with accuracy!

Ed Palubinskas is developer of “The Smartball” advertised on the NFL Network and ESPN. http://www.hoops227.atomicshops.com

I can remember, as well as I’m sure my teammates can recall ‘Coach Palubinskas’ singling me out after practice to run sprints! I remember vividly ‘Coach P’ stating to me ‘on the line,’ over and over again, so many times that I soon understood how important the game was. The irony is that I didn’t walk out of practice, I ran every sprint he demanded of me and I returned to practice the next day…the rest is history! The State of Idaho’s leading scorer that year at 24 pts/gm. Hard work pays off!” —Coach Jamaal Al-Din

The success of facebook has spawned an explosion of niche social networks all focusing on specific areas of interest.

There are several Basketball Social Networks that exist online but sadly many of them are nothing more than advanced forums.

The basketball community needs to assess basketball social networks according to the value they provide to basketballers.

There is no point joining a basketball social network if it is a glorified forum or facebook copy cat.

A good basketball network will provide basketball fans with many of the following features.

1. A personal Basketball profile page containing all their Basketball photos, videos and other Basketball specific content.

2. Basketball News Feeds to keep them up to date with everything happening in the world of Basketball

3. Basketball Video Lessons that provide Basketball instruction guaranteed to increase their skill level.

4. Basketball Articles and Tips from some of the top Basketball coaches online.

5. Basketball Equipment Reviews to help make more informed buying decisions.

6. Basketball Forum to network with like minded basketball fans world wide.

7. Basketball web store to buy and sell Basketball equipment

And much more.

Facebook, twitter, myspace and other general social networks are not dedicated enough to basketball to satisfy the needs of the pure basketball enthusiast.

Fan clubs or groups rarely retain the basketball fans interest for very long.

Basketball fans need a basketball community that blends social networking functionality with cutting edge basketball instruction ranging from quality articles to HD basketball video lessons.

The online basketball social networking space is polluted with many different websites who purchase off the shelf software and throw in a few basketball videos and photos, and think they have a basketball social network.

This type of basketball community will never flourish because basketball fans will realize the community has no real substance.

So in order to identify a basketball social network worth joining, find one that you can answer yes to the following questions;

1. Does the site provide its members with basketball video lessons that will improve their skill level?

2. Does the site provide its members with basketball news feeds to keep them up to date with all things happening in the world of basketball?

3. Does the site provide its members with valuable basketball articles and tips?

4. Does the site enable members to set up their own basketball groups?

5. Does the site provide its members with a personal profile dedicated exclusively to basketball?

If you can find a basketball community that you can answer yes to all of these questions, then that is a basketball network worth joining.
