One of the most rewarding things about being a parent is watching your child participate in sports. It’s rewarding to watch them build rapport with their buddies and improve their skill set through discipline and hard work. Through coaching the last 7 years I’ve found that when a team has their own website it really drums up excitement for the players, coaches, and families. Up until about a year ago building a website was tough and time consuming. With the emergence of WordPress and Host Gator building a site is easy and affordable fun.
There are many reasons for why you should build a website for your kid’s team:
1) It’s Educational
As a Mom or Dad you really only need to get the site up and going. Once that is done it should be up to the kids to write the articles that are posted. This is a fun way to help them improve their writing and technical skills. After each game 3-4 kids can get together and draft a recap of the game they just played.
2) Friends and Family Can Easily Follow the Team
If Grandma and Grandpa live out of town they can easily follow their grandchild’s team by simply going to the website. The great thing about the web is that it is easy to upload pictures and even video along with the recap. People can also post comments encouraging the team or just give simple greetings. WordPress (which is free) has about 500 free templates that have most of these features built right in.
3) It Makes All Players Better
Every kid on that team will want their name posted. The players and team will play that much harder knowing that they have an opportunity to have their name in an article that will be posted after the game. Since there are not many youth team articles in local papers, a team site can give the players an opportunity to feel like pros.
4) It’s Too Easy and Affordable Not To
Honestly, you need to register a domain name which is about $15 a year with Host Gator. A domain name is essentially your website name (ex. www.hudsonraidersyouthhockey.com). Obviously you can get more creative and fun than that. You will also need to pay for hosting, a company that hosts your website’s content. This is usually about $70 a year and can be done through Host Gator as well. So for about $85 a year you can host a site for your kid’s team. Through my experience parents will gladly chip in $5 to pay for the site.
5) There is Free Help Available
Host Gator and WordPress both offer free (fantastic) support. If you are interested in starting a site for your child’s team I will gladly help you to get started free of charge.
