Kansas State heads into the 2010 season off a 6-6 record in 2009. The Wildcats finished 4-4 in Big 12 play, good enough for a tie for second in the Big 12 North. This year the Wildcats have just 11 starters back and figure to be in the bottom half of the North this season. Here is a quick breakdown of what the Wildcats will send to the field this season, plus my prediction on where they finish the year in the Big 12 North.
Offense:
The Wildcats will more than likely start the 2010 season with senior Carson Coffman at quarterback. Coffman started four games for the Wildcats in 2009, throwing for 860 yards, but despite the fact that he completed nearly 61% of his passes, he finished with just two touchdowns to four interceptions.
Running back Daniel Thomas is back for his senior season after leading the Big 12 in rushing with 1,265 yards in 2009, and will play a huge role in just how good this team is in 2010. If Thomas can improve and put the offense on his back, the Wildcats could end up surprising a lot of teams this season.
Coffman will have a completely new receiving corps to throw at this season, as no starters return in the passing game. Sophomore Chris Harper and Brodrick Smith are expected to join senior Aubrey Quarles at the three starting wide receiver positions, while sophomore Travis Tannahill takes over at tight end. There will be a lot of pressure on this unit to produce, as teams will be able to load the box to stop Thomas if the Wildcats can’t get something going in the passing game.
The offensive line remains pretty much intact, as four starters return for the 2010 season. The only chance that has to be made is at the ever important left tackle spot, where junior Zach hanson appears to have the edge heading into the fall. Having experience back to this unit is a huge plus for the Wildcats in 2010.
Defense:
Kansas State returns just two starters from last season on the defensive line, but this unit figures to be one of the strengths on this side of the ball. Sophomore Brandon Harold was forced to use his medical redshirt last season, and should provide a nice spark to this unit after receiving 1st Team Freshman All-American honors in 2008. Senior Antonio Felder is back to hold down the other end spot, while junior Raphael Guidry returns in the middle.
At linebacker the Wildcats only starter back is senior outside linebacker Troy Butler, who finished third on the team with five tackles for loss in 2009. Senior Kevin Rohleder is expected to take over at the open middle linebacker spot, while junior Alex Hrebec is slated to start at the strong-side linebacker spot.
The Wildcats will look for improved play out of their secondary this season, as they get back both starters at safety and return junior starting corner Matthew Pearson. Fellow junior David Garrett is expected to make his way into the starting lineup as the other starting corner. Strong safety Emmanuel Lamar led the Wildcats with 68 tackles and finished second with three interceptions.
Big 12 Prediction – 5th North: The key for the Wildcats will be the play of Coffman at quarterback, if he is able to give them a threat throwing the ball, this team could surprise and finish in the top half of the North, but based on his performance in 2009 I think the Wildcats will struggle to put up points and likely only finish ahead of Iowa State.
