Ninja Martial Arts Training – Understanding The True Nature Of Ki-Ai – Martial Arts Shouts

Have you ever heard of ki-ai (pronounced: “key-eye”)? Perhaps you’ve heard it called ki-up, or something similar instead. These are the loud spirit shouts associated with the martial arts and seen as a complete science within the art of ninjutsu – the art of the Ninja.

While many so-called masters would have you believe that ki-ai fall into one of two categories – that of either:

1) Made up sounds used to scare your opponent, or…

2) Almost magical ways to control an attacker

While ki-ai can certainly be used to startle and confuse your opponent, and science has proven that certain sounds do effect us on a subconscious and unconscious level, what I’d like to talk about here is the “nature” of ki-ai. That is to say…

The fact that ki-ai is a natural process found in nature and manifests as a part of natural energy production and expenditure. If we look at the meaning of the word, we find that:

KI = “energy”, and…

AI = “harmony” (or “harmonizing”)

Giving us the meaning of “harmonizing energy” or “harmonizing with energy.”

Here are a few examples of natural ki-ai:

1) Thunder (the ki-ai for lightning)

2) The snapping sound of a spark (the ki-ai released when an electrical spark jumps between wires)

3) The crackling, popping noise made by a fire (the ki-ai that occurs when the heated gases expand and explode from the wood), and…

4) That grunting, growling sound you make when you try to lift heavy weights!

Rather than seeing ki-ai as some magical, strange, or “cool” thing that we just do as martial artists, “because that’s what we do,” the master martial artist and the Ninja sees ki-ai for what they are – a way to tap into and use a form of natural energy as a tool and, if need be, a weapon, to produce the results that he or she needs.
