My son became a referee last year. He is 16 and also plays high school and travel hockey. He said becoming a referee made him understand the game more, see the ice better (when he plays), and opened his eyes to the quickness in which referees have to make calls. He no longer argues with or bad mouths the referees for what he considers a bad call. In return, the referees are more open to listen to him during the Referee/Captain discussions.
